Sunday night saw a glittering Baftas. The big British winners of the evening were Colin Firth as Best Actor for Tom Ford’s debut directorial movie A Single Man. Carey Mulligan beat Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia and Audrey Tatou for Coco before Chanel to win best actress for An Education.

The 24-year-old actress who won for her first film role was genuinely shocked: “I didn’t prepare a speech as I didn’t expect to win”. Others winners included Twilight’s Kristen Stewart as the Orange Rising Star.

Meanwhile, the film that garnered the most awards was Iraq war drama Hurt Locker, which won six Baftas including Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to ever take the prize, Best Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. Avatar won two awards.

Bollywood star Anil Kapoor and actress Claire Danes presented a Bafta for Costume Design to Sandy Powell for the film The Young Victoria.
